Quick and easy charging is another strength that ensures daily use of the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron is as undemanding as possible. Depending on version, they feature a 52 kWh or 77 kWh battery which can be charged at HPC (high-power charging) stations at a charging capacity of up to 100 or up to 125 kW respectively. At 125 kW, and in ideal conditions, the battery can achieve an 80 percent state of charge from a 5 percent starting point in 38 minutes. WLTP testing has confirmed that the Q4 40 e-tron, which uses the larger battery, can recharge enough electricity – again in ideal conditions – to cover a distance of about 80 miles (WLTP) in around ten minutes, and can achieve a range of up to 316 miles.

Using the myAudi app, owners can activate charging remotely using a smartphone. The app also provides access to the comfort remote preconditioning system, which enables remote adjustment of the cabin temperature and seat heating functions to ensure that the cabin climate is always comfortable well before a journey begins.

Note there are two types of charging modes:

AC charging (typically advertised as 7 kW and 22 kW) using the Type 2 plug
- All EV batteries are DC and they require the conversion of standard AC power to DC to charge.
- When charging from AC power, the charge rate is limited by the AC to DC converter (typically called the 'onboard charger'). So even if you plug into a 22 kW AC charge point, most EVs including the Q4, will only charge at a maximum 11 kW (the maximum rated power of the onboard charger).
- Regardless of battery temperature or state of charge, the vehicle should be able to make use of the available 11 kW rate at most periods throughout the charge cycle.

DC charging (usually advertised as Rapid and can be rated up to 350 kW) using CCS
- Since this is supplied as DC, the current bypasses the onboard charger and is simply modulated by the battery management system (BMS) into the battery.
- The Q4 BMS permits maximum charge rates of 100 kW or 135 kW depending on the battery specification. The actual rate will vary throughout the charge cycle as the battery state of charge increases. Slow charging and general reliability
- The charger network is not yet 100% reliable and robust and some suppliers provide more reliable facilities than others.
- The advertised maximum power of the charger is not a guarantee and the actual recieved power to the vehicle, will be impacted by the above and also the robustness of the charger and power supply provision to that charger.
- In my experience it is unlikley that you will receivee the maximum rated power of the charger and the vehicle will not continously charge at the maximum rated charge power of the BMS. In most cases you will still be able to charge from 20 - 80% state of charge with a rapid charger in 30 - 40 minutes.

I cant get any faster charging than 55kw on my Q4 40 Edition 1. That on fast chargers (150 and 300kw) that others have just used and got really high speeds, when thebattery was warm (2 hours into a drive) with an ambient temperature of 14 deg celsius. Waiting on Audi Service to call me back .....

Will be interested to hear any feedback on HPC Charge rates. I was at a Porsche mobility centre the other week. Fully expected to get 100kw from a 20% SOC. no way. I was lucky to hit 80kw from a 350kw capable charger. Also hit only 75kw from the 150kw rated charger. So much for 125kw charge rates.

I did manage to achieve almost the full charge rate that was in accordance with the Audi spec. This was at a Shell 175kW charge point.

What software is your car running, wonder if newer ones are better at drawing power.

Same old crap that was on the car when it was delivered in November 2021
I’ve never achieved close to that anywhere and was pleasantly surprised since it was 32C that day. I’d driven 2.5 hours down to 12%, which should have at least meant the battery was at optimum temp and a good SOC to start charging.
The charge curve did really match the Audi spec - so it’s possible, but I think it needs a few things to come together, which are totally unknown to us and Audi/VW don’t care to rationalise the software.
A plus is the Shell charger I used, on the Audi charge membership card was 44p/kWh at high power, which is cheaper than most.

I managed the full 125kW on a Porsche HPC charger the other day! This was when at approx 20% charge and after driving for 3 hours.
